The first 30 days following a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes can be difficult, but the new multimedia KidCare Kit could be a quick-reference guide to the first set of “firsts” in diabetes.
The kit has a range of multimedia, print and online resources to provide guidance to families and children with diabetes immediately after diagnosis, created through a partnership of Children With Diabetes and Sanofi-Aventis. It includes “quick cards” for parents with basic information that addresses diabetes, blood glucose testing, and the complexities of insulin dosing. The kit also provides themed “Give One” cards and brochures for caregivers such as teachers and babysitters that can be customized about what to do and who to contact in a diabetes emergency. A DVD in the kit has testimonials from other families, caregivers, and diabetes educators and physicians to provide advice and emotional support. There is also a “Calorie King” carb counting book included – thank goodness we are not still in the days of the dreaded and convoluted “exchange” system! Families can download additional customizable cards for teachers, coaches, bus drivers, physical education teachers and other caregivers.
We’re glad to see a new kit out for newly diagnosed families, but hope it won’t
be limited to only certain hospitals and centers – often those who need it most
won’t have access to support groups or a large diabetes team! We would love to
see this program expanded…
